Slow Down and Rest

May 01, 2026
It’s about 10:15 am and we’re finished with morning cow/ calf checks, chores, breakfast and sitting outside working on math -it’s far too nice out to do school made, and Sage said, “Can we just lay on the grass and take a nap for a few minutes?”

First, if you know Sage, you know how rare this request is.

Second, I felt like it was a great idea!

Calving season is a marathon not a sprint. And though it can feel like a whirlwind where you’re juggling more balls than you can keep track of and your plate is overflowing some days, there are moments like these where I’m reminded to slow down, breathe, be and rest.

This is a season of growth and new life popping out everywhere and that can feel invigorating, and also exhausting.

Growth (of any kind) also takes rest.

The little calves snoozing in the sun remind us of that every day!

So as we soaked up the sun on the grass while we waited to go check on a first calf heifer in the process of having her calf, we rested.

A brief moment in which we paused, listened to the beautiful sounds of spring and refueled.

Math waited another hour and that was just fine.

Another reason I’m so grateful for this life. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
